Masterclass: Exploring Playing Styles and Improvisation
Through his compositions and technical expertise, Renaud Garcia-Fons offers a masterclass dedicated to the many facets of the double bass.
The program includes technical instruction on the instrument, as well as an in-depth exploration of improvisation and modal expression.
A two-part journey
1. Demo and interpretation:
Renaud Garcia-Fons will open the session by performing some of his solo pieces, showcasing the diversity of his approach, both in pizzicato and with the bow.
2. Discussion and In-Depth Exploration: Following a Q&A session with the audience, he will elaborate on his approach to improvisation, focusing on the modal framework and techniques that enrich his playing:
– Intonation and Finger Placement: The key role of the thumb and the precision of the left hand.
– Ornamentation and Modality: How ornamentation supports improvisation within a modal framework.
– Phrasing and expressiveness: The nuances of bowing and pizzicato.
– Double bass and flamenco: Specific techniques for integrating the instrument into this musical world.
A lyrical and melodic approach
Finally, he will highlight the lyrical qualities of the double bass, emphasizing its melodic potential, which goes far beyond its traditional role
