Brad Mehldau at La Philarmonie de Paris

Brad Mehldau, who made his name on the New York scene in the 1990s and has been a regular guest at the Philharmonie de Paris, is one of the most lyrical and intimate voices in contemporary jazz. With Après Fauré, he confirms his natural affinity with the classical repertoire.

We know of the American pianist’s collaborations with the soprano Renée Fleming and the mezzo Anne Sofie von Otter, his exchanges with Charles Rosen at Carnegie Hall and the hold Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert and Bach have had on his creativity and vocabulary. His revivals of the ‘classics’ are never linear, but expand through contact with a variety of influences to open up a vast and powerful imagination, always virtuosic, always welcoming. Bach was already whispering in Brad Mehldau’s ear in 2018 about a recomposition and improvisation project under his double signature. A new inspirational figure who has long been at his side, Fauré invites him to converse at the same keyboard and to combine original compositions with a selection of nocturnes that are close to his heart.
