« Turn out the stars: aspects of the Bill Evans legacy »
Le pianiste Américain Willis Delony présentera ses pensées sur l’héritage musical de Bill Evans.
In this presentation, American pianist Willis Delony considers the impact of Bill Evans in expanding our conception of how musical genres intersect and how his work helped expand the de nition of the jazz composer. Also discussed is how his playing elevated the notion of jazz pianism and technique to embrace the nuances, virtuosity and subtleties employed in classical repertoire. The centerpiece of the presentation is Evans’s 4-movement suite for solo piano, In Memory of His Father, which was featured on his famous Town Hall Concert recording from 1964, and which was recently recorded by Delony on his album Out of Character: Classical and Jazz Connections IV. Delony, who is currently Professor of Piano and Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, will also provide some background on Evans’s Louisiana connection, in particular his time as a student at Southeastern Louisiana University in the 1950’s, and where, coincidentally, Delony was the director of jazz studies from 1986-2000.
